Corporate Risk helps all Wells Fargo businesses identify and manage risk. The team focuses on several key risk types, including conduct, credit, financial crimes, information security, interest rate, liquidity, market, model, operational, regulatory compliance, reputation, strategic, and technology risk. The group provides leadership, enhances communications, assists with problem identification and solutions, and shares best practices. In addition, the group provides an enterprise-wide view of risk, assists management and our Board of Directors in identifying and monitoring risks that may affect multiple lines of business, and takes appropriate action when business activities exceed the risk tolerance of the company.
There are three openings within this posting to align with each line of business (Middle Market, Commercial Capital, and Treasury Payments). The Risk Officers will report directly to the Commercial Banking Chief Risk Officer and will leverage their experience and knowledge of risk management, business functions, products, and services to provide independent, holistic risk leadership and oversight of the business. The organizational design within each Risk Officer group will follow a consistent framework, while allowing customization to meet the needs of the business.
These leaders will lead a team of risk professionals to ensure that Corporate Risk provides senior management with an independent perspective of the level of risk to which the business is exposed across all risk types. This includes exposure across compliance risk, credit risk, model risk, other operational risk, reputation risk, and strategic risk – both in aggregate and individually.
The Risk Officers will regularly present to senior management in Commercial Banking, Risk management, and Regulators on the risk position of the businesses for which they are aligned.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provide single point of contact to the line of business CEO for all Corporate Risk oversight to include financial and non-financial risks.
Understand themes and trends across multiple risk types along with the impact of those themes and trends.
Demonstrate and sponsor appropriate risk management and leadership behaviors in support of doing what is right for the customer, people as a competitive advantage, ethics, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Identify and escalate risk and control issues to the line of business CEO and Commercial Risk Officer with transparency, in a timely manner and in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
Implement the Risk Management Framework through promoting adoption of the Risk Operating Model, setting clear behavioral expectations for risk management, ensuring clearly defined roles and accountability, and promoting a sound control environment.
Drive the execution of remediation plans to close consent order and/or MRA regulatory commitments, as applicable
Regularly present to senior management in Commercial and Risk, Regulators, and internal and external shareholders.
Oversee and actively manage risks within the risk appetite approved by the OC and the Board; oversee the continued refinement and/or development of appropriate controls and ensure thorough and timely resolution of issues.
Promote a strong risk management culture and discipline throughout their businesses.
Advise senior business leadership regarding appropriate operations policies and processes leveraging risk management metrics/business scorecard, track performance, and monitor trends across the business.
Role #1 – Middle Market Risk Officer is part of the Corporate Risk organization and oversees frontline risk management of the Middle Market business. This role is being established to enhance effectiveness of Corporate Risk oversight, creating streamlined interaction with Middle Market and a comprehensive view of credit risk, operational risk, and compliance across the Middle Market business. The Middle Market Risk Officer will manage and approve the credit portfolio for the Middle Market business.
Role #2 –Commercial Capital Risk Officer is part of the Corporate Risk organization and oversees frontline risk management of the Commercial Capital business. This role is being established to enhance effectiveness of Corporate Risk oversight, creating streamlined interaction with Commercial Capital and a comprehensive view of credit risk, operational risk, and compliance across the Commercial business. The Commercial Capital Risk Officer will manage and approve the credit portfolio for the Commercial business.
Role #3 – Treasury Payments Risk Officer is part of the Corporate Risk organization and oversees frontline risk management of the Treasury Payments business. This role is being established to enhance effectiveness of Corporate Risk oversight, creating streamlined interaction with a comprehensive view of operational risk and compliance across their business.
In addition to understanding and challenging the current risk profile of the business, these Risk Officers are responsible for confirming that their respective business strategic priorities align with the Company's risk appetite and the risk management governance framework.
10+ years of management experience
12+ years of risk experience, financial services industry experience or combination of both
Other Desired Qualifications
10+ years of experience within the specific line of business being covered, with an extensive risk background and broad familiarity with regulation risk requirements.
Expertise in all risk categories including credit, operational, and compliance, with extensive knowledge of laws and regulations from the regulatory agencies.
Demonstrated success running a balanced business model while driving transformation, continuous improvement, and efficiency, including the ability to manage and prioritize potentially competing objectives to achieve optimal customer, shareholder, and/or team member outcomes.
Proven communication skills with the ability to influence, develop, partner with, and maintain collaborative relations at all levels within the organization and externally with customers, regulators, partners, and communities.
Proven experience successfully leading a line of business or corporate function in a business of comparable size, scale, complexity, and regulatory oversight.
Deep knowledge of the infrastructure needed to support a commercial business, leading-edge risk practices, and required end-to-end processes.
Strong process management, reengineering skills, and Six Sigma/Lean skills.
Proven experience building, leading, and engaging high-performing, diverse, and inclusive teams.
Proven ability to foster constructive relationships with regulatory agencies, peers at other financial institutions, business leaders, and other internal risk management leaders/groups.
Demonstrated ability to operate independently and effectively build relationships within a matrixed environment to influence outcomes both within line of business and Corporate Risk.
Strong leadership and people management skills to lead a large and geographically dispersed organization. Evidence of ensuring team has the right capabilities and number of resources.
Results-driven approach to work.
Capable of working under great pressure with equanimity to manage a considerable volume of information and priorities.
Strong educational credentials with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, M.B.A., or Master's degree preferred.
