This is a high-level technical position in the CSSD network operations center (NOC) responsible for assuring continuity of service for the University’s data network. This position plays a lead role in the test, configuration, maintenance, and evaluation of network components. Responsibilities include training and guiding technical analysts in configuring and troubleshooting network and firewall equipment. The Engineer will also respond to alerts and faults generated by the NOC monitoring systems and investigate each problem to determine its cause and take appropriate steps to resolve faults as quickly as possible on a proactive basis. When outages or network performance problems occur that are observable by the University community, this position will determine the cause of the outage, take appropriate steps to resolve the problem, and document the cause and resolution of the problem. Additional responsibilities include coordinating and planning network changes in conjunction with the CSSD Network Engineering group and ensuring that these changes are properly documented. Some participation in ad hoc teams will be required to troubleshoot problems involving network applications and services. Additional duties include participation in the overall design and development of NOC network management strategies, testing and application of IOS software patches, security updates, and related activities. Position requires work on rotating shift schedule including weekends and holidays as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent in experience preferred. Candidate must be highly proficient in the troubleshooting, design, and implementation of network technologies including Ethernet, ATM, Firewalls, DNS, Video, Voice, VOIP, TCP/IP and other transport protocols. Cisco CCNA certification required, Cisco CCNP or CCIE certification desirable. Minimum of five to ten years designing local and wide area networks and physical infrastructure required with emphasis on Cisco-based networks. Experience with Juniper, Foundry, and other network equipment desirable. Cisco CCNA certification desirable, Cisco CCNP or CCIE certification desirable.
